A Chairde- Congratulations on yer great website. It is brilliant! I just wanted to drop you a few lines to let you know that near to where I live are the graves of James Fintan Lalor's Brother and Sister. His Brother William A. Lalor married Amelia Fox, and his sister (Right now I cannot remember her first name) married Joseph Grierson Fox. So, two Fox siblings married two Lalor siblings. The Fox family were interesting as well. The father of the Fox children who married the Lalors was William Maine Fox, born neat Trim, Co. Meath in about 1780. He was a younger son of The Fox of Kilcoursey, Chief of the name.He married Eleanor Loftus Lynn, a daughter of Adam Loftus Lynn of Dungulph Castle in Co. Wexford (near Fethard On Sea). He was apparently a successful merchant in Dublin, but fell upon some business reversals, and emmigrated with his wife and children in about 1837 to join a son who had previously gone there. He was raised in the Church of England, but at some point became a Presbyterian, and became a Lay Preacher. He came here (Wisconsin) in 1840. He was instrumental in establishing many Presbyterian congregations before the arrival of any regular Presbyterian ministers. His sons and daughters intermarried with the Keenan and Lalor families, and several branches of his family converted to Catholicism. The Fox family was very prominant as early Physicians and Surgeons in this area. Another of his sons was the first Prsbyterian Minister in this area. One of his sons, Dr. Matthew Fox, MD, was a close friend of Charles Stewart Parnell, and was President of the Wisconsin Branch of the Irish Land League, which supported Parnell and Davitt. He was also very active in the Defenders in this area in the 1840's-1860's which defended small farmers against those who sought to steal their land through questionable legal means. One of James Fintan Lalor's grandneices, Margaret Lalor, died a couple of years ago, aged 94. she was well known here as a Labour Union Activist, Feminist, Environmentalist and progressive Political Activist. So you can see that the legacy of the Fox and Lalor families has been carried on to the present day. My family is from the area around Kilmacthomas in Co. Waterford, though some of my family were from An Rinn in Waterford. The last native Irish speaker in my family was my grandfather who was born in 1905 and died in 1978. I speak only a few words of Irish, though I have a good vocabulary, I have no grammar to speak of. I still prefer, however, to use the Irish form of my name, as you see, though no one in the USA can make even a close attempt to pronounce it! I would like to hear if any of this is of interest to you. All the best! Mise le meas - Seoirse Mac Domhnaill, e mail: mcdonaldgeorge@yahoo.com

Wonderful site. I'm descended from James Lalor b. 1805-7 in Rathdowney, and married Johanna Creagh 1830. I believe his parents were John Lalor and Margaret Brophy, and I am interested in getting some history of these two.

I was intrigued to find this site on the internet. My father's family were Lalors from New Ross, Co Kilkenny. His name was Thomas and he had three brothers. My maternal grandmother was also a Lawlor, from Clondalkin, Co Dublin.

What a wonderful site! I am interested in land reform and have long been fascinated by James Fintan Lalor. Have you read the biography of him by David Buckley? "James Fintan Lalor: Radical." Lalor is a kind of hero to me, so much so that I have named a fairly major character in a fantasy trilogy I have written in honor of him. Finn Lalor, the character in my trilogy, is not historically based on the actual James Fintan Lalor, but shares a deep concern with land reform, expressed, in Finn's case, as anger over the loss of the commons following enclosure acts. I haven't yet found a publisher for my fantasy, but will be sure to send you copies if and when it makes it into print.
